Degree Requirements

MFA degree requirements 

  • 9 creative writing workshops (27 units) 
  • 1 course in poetics (3 units) 
  • 2 thesis courses (6 units)  

MFA completion requires submission of the following: 

  • 150 to 250 page manuscript in fiction or nonfiction; or
  • 110 to 120 page play or screenplay; or
  • 50 pages of poetry

Submissions will be closely reviewed, edited and refined with the assistance of the student's Thesis Committee. The Creative Writing thesis can be written in English and/or Spanish. For more information on the thesis proposal and approval process, please contact the MFA in Creative Writing program director. Thesis continuation is a 1-unit course, taken with advisor’s approval as needed.
